Maat Journal: The journaling app for more clarity, focus and calm.

What is Maat Journal?

Maat Journal is my attempt to use an app to get my life in order and improve its most important areas.

Think of it as an intelligent, modern journal that helps you reflect, grow, clear your head and find more clarity.

It's less of a productivity app and more of a tool for mental clarity and personal growth.

What makes Maat Journal different

Journaling by voice

For a long time, I struggled to keep a regular journal, even though I knew how much it helped me clear my head. So one thing was clear from the start: journaling had to work by voice. With Maat Journal, you can simply speak your entries, just like a WhatsApp voice message. The app automatically transcribes your recording within seconds. Whether you're waiting at a traffic light, walking along the beach or about to fall asleep.

Privacy, data security and data protection

I'm paranoid when it comes to my private thoughts. So I wanted to build something where no one but me could read my data, not even the people running the app. Your entries are end-to-end encrypted. There's no tracking, no advertising, and you can export your data in the open JSON format at any time. The encryption uses the same principle as Bitcoin: you receive a 12-word seed phrase. Only someone with that seed phrase can decrypt and read your data. No one else. The Maat Journal website also provides an open-source tool to decrypt your data yourself, completely independently of the provider. There's biometric locking too.

Inspiration

I didn't want an app that told me how to live. I wanted one that encouraged me to think about the right things for my current situation. That's what Maat Journal offers: inspiration and prompts to help you find clarity and see things from new perspectives.

Growth

Personal growth matters to me, but not just in the abstract, from reading countless books. I want it to be measurable. That's why Maat Journal includes the Maat Score test. It assesses the most important areas of your life, such as finances, health and relationships. You get a clear number, and Maat Journal helps you identify and address potential imbalances for a more contented, balanced life overall.

Track and understand your mood

Everyone has difficult days or periods. With Maat Journal, you can record and review your mood, and recognize and understand patterns in your emotions: what might trigger mood swings and what might help improve your mood. I also find it helpful to see that even when one day is bad, plenty of other days are good, and that this particular bad day will probably pass too.

Guided reflection

One of Maat Journal's special features is the ability to choose different perspectives, such as the Critic or the Stoic. Depending on the personality you choose, you'll receive very different feedback on your entries. This helps you take a step back, question familiar thought patterns and develop new insights.

Works offline

You can use Maat Journal offline too. All data is stored locally on your device and only synced when you're back online. That mattered to me because I also like putting my phone in airplane mode so nobody can interrupt me.

And much more...

Yes, there are other features too: a meditation timer, psychological tests, personal challenges and more. The best thing is to give it a try.

How I use Maat Journal as my journal

  1. Five minutes in the morning: I start the day with a short reflection. What's happening today? What's my main goal? How did I sleep, and how do I feel?
  2. Structuring decisions: For important decisions, I use the app to organize the pros and cons and listen to my intuition.
  3. Processing emotions: After stressful days or difficult conversations, I speak my thoughts into the app. It helps me gain distance and clear my head.
  4. Capturing ideas: I record creative ideas or sudden insights by voice before they disappear. I always use the keyword "idea", so I can easily search for all my ideas later. I do the same with experiences or insights from the day. That keeps everything in one place, ready to revisit whenever I want.
  5. Weekly review: Every Sunday, I reflect on the past week. What worked well? What would I like to do differently next week? I try to do this a little each day, but at least once a week I do it deliberately.
  6. Mood tracking: I regularly record my mood to recognize patterns and better understand what affects me.
  7. Celebrating successes: I record small and big successes. It keeps me motivated and helps me see my progress.
  8. Monthly Maat Score: Once a month, I take the Maat Score test to identify imbalances in my life and, above all, measure my progress — or sometimes recognize setbacks.
  9. Closing the day: Before going to sleep, I talk about the day for 3–5 minutes. What did I learn? What am I grateful for?
  10. Changing perspective: From time to time, I use the reflections to find new ways of looking at my situation.
  11. Quiet timer: My goal is 13 minutes of silence a day. I wouldn't exactly call it reflection; it's simply sitting and observing. Maat Journal has a built-in timer that makes this easy to measure.

Why journaling matters and how Maat Journal began

I started keeping a journal over 15 years ago. I was travelling a lot and wanted to capture the many impressions, experiences and memories. The idea was simple: when I'm older, I want to look back and feel that I really lived.

Over time, my journal changed. I began writing down not just events, but thoughts, experiences, new things I'd learned and whatever was on my mind.

This had an unexpected effect: my head became clearer. My thoughts became more structured. I could express myself better, and I felt calmer inside.

All my books eventually grew out of this regular journaling. They're based almost entirely on personal experiences and insights that started in my journal. Looking back, I'd say regular journaling was one of the most important steps of my life. It changed many areas of my life in lasting ways.

With Maat Journal, I want to make that same experience possible for you.
